“For the first time, the woman felt fear, though she did not know why. Adrenaline shot through her trunk and her limbs, generating a tingling heat and urging her to swim faster. She guessed that she was fifty yards from shore. She could see the line of white foam where the waves broke on the beach. She saw the lights in the house, and for a comforting moment she thought she saw someone pass by one of the windows. The fish was about forty feet from the woman, off to the side, when it turned suddenly to the left, dropped entirely below the surface, and, with two quick thrusts of its tall, was upon her.

At first, the woman thought she had snagged her leg on a rock or a piece of floating wood. There was no initial pain, only one violent tug on her right leg. She reached down to touch her foot, treading water with her left leg to keep her head up, feeling in the blackness with her left hand. She could not find her foot. She reached higher on her leg, and then she was overcome by a rush of nausea and dizziness. Her groping fingers had found a nub of bone and tattered flesh. She knew that the warm, pulsing flow over her fingers in the chill water was her own blood. Pain and panic struck together. The woman threw her head back and screamed a guttural cry of terror.”

Reviews:
"You better steel yourself for this one. It isn't a tale for the faint of heart - or stomach - and the hardiest of souls may sense a momentary chill days after reading it … Jaws proves once again that you don't need demons or exorcists to create blanching, relentless terror." (Philadelphia Inquirer)
"… A major novel, one that has created virtually unprecedented … excitement … A fascinating story about what happens when a great white shark terrorizes a Long Island town." (Publishers Weekly)
"… Jaws is a tightly-written, tautly-paced study of the social, political and psychological impact of terror on a small community … Benchley has forged and touched a metaphor that still makes us tingle." (Washington Post)
"… fulfills all expectations … Jaws is lean, all sinew, everything directed toward a climax that is implanted on the retina from the very first sentence." (New York Magazine)
"Powerful climax … His story grabs you at once … Read Jaws - by all means read it." (The New York Times)
"… An absolutely super yarn which demands to be read in one sitting. And it's the best man-vs-fish story since 1851." (Adam Smith)
4 Scars 4 Scars

My Opinion:
This is the quintessential "Nature on the Rampage!" story that was so popular; thanks to another of Stephen Spielberg's cinematic treasures, that it has truly become part of American pop culture. What moviegoer doesn't recognize the "da-da, da-da" theme which haunted so many swimmers and continues to be recycled in one form or another in every shark movie made since. But I digress. The book upon which the movie was based is excellent and a tad more plausible with some explanation as to the behavior of the shark. In addition, the author provides a good amount of character development and interaction to help convey the "ordinary person thrown into extraordinary circumstances" theme. Be advised that minor sections of this book are not suitable for younger readers due to sexual content.
