“Con and Fern were paddling hard when they were diverted by a school of five-foot Ichthyosaurs leaping out of the water in graceful arches. It was an enchanting sight. Then Fern noticed something in the water beneath the leapers. She pointed in its direction. “Did you see that, Con?” “See what?” “Something big in the water” Fern stared into the blue depths. “It’s gone now. No … wait …” She stopped paddling and strained to see past the reflections on the waves. She screamed, “Get out! Get out of the water!” Rick and Oak peered down into the depths and saw a huge shape rising beneath them. Four flippers beat like two pairs of wings propelling an immense gaping mouth. Rick was only partway on the platform when Oak uttered a startled cry and was jerked beneath the surface. Rick caught a fleeting glimpse of huge, toothy jaws closed around Oak’s legs, pulling him under. The boat rose on water displaced by the creature swimming beneath it. Fern saw a dark shape with something pale in its jaws fading into the depths.”

My Opinion:
This book is the sequel to "Cretaceous Sea" written by the same author. In my review of Cretaceous Sea, I wrote, "I thought this book was just "another" time travel story with a few avian-humanoid aliens (kind of unique concept actually) thrown in for spice." Cretaceous Sea turned out to be a grand prehistoric adventure. Unfortunately, that is not the case with 'Sea of Time' which IS basically "just another time travel story" from my perspective. For time travel aficionados, this book has a lot to offer including an expansive exploration of the potential catastrophic affects of ones actions in the past on self, family, society, and the world. From a "Nature on the Rampage" perspective though, there is very little to hold one's interest. This book is sort of an opposite to the Cretaceous Sea which devoted probably 85% of the story to man's survival in a hostile prehistoric animal-filled world during the K-T extinction event. At most, 'Sea of Time' spends 15% of the story alluding to and/or encountering prehistoric animals. This is not a bad read really but the meager "man vs. prehistoric beast" content left me feeling ripped off.
