“Oh God!" said Rick in horror. 'What's the matter?' asked Con, her voice filled with concern. Rick whirled around, then froze when he spotted the image of the slowly tumbling rock. "Those symbols on your wall … on those charts … on that screen." Rick said in a shocked, quiet voice. "They ar clocks. They're counting backward.” "Backward? To what?"

“The K-T event.” Rick's agitation exploded into frantic activity. . . "Don't you know what this island's for? Asked Rick incredulously. "Don't you know where we are? This place was built to observe the K-T event.” Con grabbed Rick's arm. "You're scaring me," she said. Joe turned to Con. "Do you know what he's talking about?”

"Sixty-five million years ago, a nine-mile-wide meteor hit the Earth,” said Rick. "It's called the K-T event. It wiped out the dinosaurs. It wiped out damn near everything. Only for us, it isn't 65 million years ago. For us, it will happen today.

My Opinion:
I thought this book was just "another" time travel story with a few avian-humanoid aliens (kind of unique concept actually) thrown in for spice. However it turns into much more. In addition to exploring man's survival in a hostile prehistoric animal-filled world, the novel provides painstakingly detailed description of what it might have been like to be a first-hand witness to the beginning of the K-T extinction event as a massive meteorite smashes into the earth's surface. Very interesting and detailed descriptions of the cataclysmic effects such an impact might have on the Earth and all life it sustains.
