“As Vargas relayed the order and the men opened fire, Cox grumbled, "This is bad. This is very bad." The giant dinosaur roared as the thin lines of red-hot light struck its tough, nubby skin. But it did not roar in pain. It roared as if annoyed by a swarm of insects. Throwing down a half-eaten raptor, it charged toward the source of the stinging lights. Vogcifliauer shouted, "Resch, open fire!" The tank's lasers began blazing away. But without the computer to automatically rotate the turret and guide the guns, the sizzling shots lagged behind the fast-moving beast. Within seconds, the two-ton mousier was towering over the petrified men.

Vagas shouted, "The eyes! Aim for the eyes!" In the blink of an eye, the behemoth reached down, grabbed the sergeant and stuffed him into its gaping mouth. Vargas screamed as the sharp teeth pierced his body, tore his flesh aid crushed his bones.”

Reviews:
"Exciting, fast-paced adventure…" (DAW Books)

My Opinion:
The "amateurish" printing and cover art combined with the publisher's name (i.e., 1st Books Library) is somewhat misleading (although not that much). I bought this book on a whim and then shelved it for several months thinking it was a "kid's book". It wasn't until I ran out of reading material, that I cracked it open. Space exploration, corporate greed, a renegade Hans Solo-like pilot (Ref: Star Wars) with a dark secret, aliens, military units, and extraterrestrial creatures with hearty appetites (Hint, read the title of this book). The story was appealing enough to finish and had several subplots that held my attention. Parents are warned that there is a sprinkling of subtle and not so subtitle sexual situations that seem inevitable when military units comprised of mixed genders are subject to long tours in space. Paleontological accuracy freaks best avoid this one as the research on the animals seemed slighted (e.g., the author's reference to the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the "Jurassic Age" on Earth).
