This set of cards are the key component of a Dino Hunt "preview" edition game (a.k.a. "Demo Hunt" of which an estimated 6,000 game sets were produced, 5,000 of which were distributed to retailers for promotional/demonstration purposes leaving the remaining 1,000 games available for retail sale to Dino Hunt players and collectors.
 
The cards have plain borders (i.e., not gold), an orange colored "1996" date under the dinosaur head logo on the backs of the cards, and the first  paragraph(s) on the front of the cards are in bold print with the second paragraph(s) being in regular thin font.
 
There are three confirmed design variations compared to the cards in the Boxed Game:
 
  • The Amargasaurus card front has a "3" value for the Energy and a "6" value for the Score whereas the Boxed Game card has a "4" value for the Energy and an "8" value for the Score.
 
  • The "Follow the Tracks" card has a picture of herbivore whereas the Boxed Game card shows a carnivore.
 
  • The "Misfire" card has no title above the text on the front of the card whereas the Boxed Game card has the word "Malfunction" in red lettering above the text.
